Can You Freeze Cookies?

Freezing cookies is a wonderful way to save time.  By making cookies when it is convenient and freezing them for later, you can have delicious homemade cookies in minutes.  Cookies fair quite well in the freezer with a few tips to make them last.

How To Freeze Cookies

The hardest part of freezing cookies is making them.  My mom used to make a dozen different types of cookies for Christmas.  She would start the baking process around Thanksgiving and keep them all in the freezer until she needed them.  Freezing cookies makes last minute school bake sales and unexpected guests a zero stress situation.  A few simple tips will keep those homemade cookies tasting like they just came out of the oven whenever you need them.

A quick tip is to package the same type of cookie together in one container or freezer bag.  Mixing different types of cookies will blend and dilute their flavors.

Be sure to only wrap cookies that are completely cooled.  Place them in the refrigerator for about an hour to be sure that they are thoroughly cooled.  Warm cookies will condense which can lead to mold.

Cookies will last in the freezer for 4-6 months easily if wrapped appropriately.  Air is the enemy in the freezer.  Any air that touches the cookies will contribute to freezer burn and ruin the taste and texture of the cookies.

My favorite method to combat air is to wrap each cookie individually in plastic wrap as tightly as possible.  Not only does this keep air away from the surface of the cookie, but it also allows for thawing one cookie at a time if needed.

Steps For Freezing Cookies:

  1. Allow the cookies to completely cool – use the refrigerator if you have any doubt.
  2. Wrap each cookie in plastic wrap as tightly as possible to keep air away from the cookie’s surface.
  3. Over wrap each cookie in aluminum foil.
  4. Place the individually wrapped cookies into a plastic freezer bag or freezer container. Be sure to only place cookies of the same type in each bag/container.
  5. Remove as much air as possible.
  6. Label and place in the freezer.

How To Thaw Cookies

Its very easy to thaw frozen cookies.  If you just need one or two cookies, simply remove the individually wrapped cookies from the freezer and allow to come to room temperature.  If you’re in a hurry, you can pop them in the microwave for a few seconds and they will be ready to go.  If you know you will be using a whole batch of cookies, you can remove the whole container from the freezer and let them thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
