Can You Freeze Calzones

Calzones are a delicious food for quick weeknight dinners, casual weekend meals, or lunches to go.  Making calzones ahead and freezing them are a perfect way to speed up dinner on those crazy evenings and have easy packed lunches throughout the week.

Calzones are a delicious comfort food with the traditional pizza style recipes of cheese and sauce (maybe a little pepperoni thrown it), but they can also be lightened up by using some healthier fillings.  Leftover chicken shredded up or grilled veggies can be delicious options for a healthier filling option.  The options are limited only to your imagination and maybe the leftovers you have in the fridge.

While freshly made homemade pizza dough is certainly delicious, store bought pizza dough will speed up the time to make calzones considerably without compromising too much on taste.  Simply roll out the pizza dough and cut into the size you desire and fill with the ingredients of your choosing.  Fold over the dough and pinch shut, poke a few steam vent holes in the top and voila, you have a calzone.  It is nice to use and egg wash on the top to give the finished product a nice golden sheen and to help keep the calzone from opening in the oven.

So now that you have your lovely batch of calzones, how do you go about keeping them for future use.  Freezing the calzones will keep them fresh and ready to go when they are needed.

How To Freeze Calzones

Freezing calzones is super easy, quick and definitely worth it.

The following easy steps guide you through the process of freezing calzones:

  1. Allow the calzones to completely cool to room temperature.
  2. Wrap each calzones individually in high-quality plastic wrap.
  3. Now wrap each plastic wrapped calzones in aluminum foil. (This will doubly ensure that the calzone will be protected from air and thus freezer burn.)
  4. Place the individually wrapped calzones into a freezer safe bag or container.
  5. Seal tightly removing as much air as possible.
  6. Label and place in the freezer.

How To Thaw Calzones

If you plan to use the frozen calzones for dinner and forgot to thaw them ahead of time – no worries.  Simply extend the reheating time by about 10 minutes when warming in the oven.

Using the frozen calzones as a packed lunch is a breeze.  Simply toss the frozen calzone in your lunch bag and it will be thawed by lunchtime.  Place in the microwave and heat using 1 minute bursts for 2-3 minutes, or use a toaster oven at 300° F until heated through.

You can enjoy delicious calzones without the delivery and without the extra calories by making your own homemade calzones and freezing for later use.
